Afgelopen maandag 12 december overleed Bart van Heerikhuizen (1948-2022). Bart
maakte deel uit van de invloedrijke groep publiekssociologen die onder Joop Goudsblom
(1932-2020) school maakte in de jaren ’60, ’70 en ’80, was een van de oprichters en
langstzittende redacteuren van het Amsterdams Sociologisch Tijdschrift (AST, 1974-2002),
genoot jarenlang faam als een van de beste en meest geliefde docenten van de Universiteit
van Amsterdam, was een beganigd observator, verteller en schrijver, maar boven alles was
hij een bijzonder levenslustig en ruimhartig mens. We zullen hem, zijn stem en zijn pen missen.

On December 12, our much-loved and greatly appreciated former colleague Bart van
Heerikhuizen passed away.
Bart worked at the department from 1972 until his retirement in 2013. For a long time, he was
the cornerstone of sociological theory education at our department. He did this with great
enthusiasm, and truly inspired many generations of students (among whom some of our
colleagues) with his lectures.
As co-founder of the Amsterdams Sociologisch Tijdschrift and co-author, originally with his
friend and our former colleague Nico Wilterdink, of the textbook Samenlevingen, he made an
important contribution to Dutch sociology. We cherish many fond memories of him: his endless
curiosity about society, his passion for sociology and sociologists (especially the classics!), his
warmth as a colleague, his optimism and strength as a person, also in confronting the disease
he had to struggle with in the last phase of his life.
